Our Editorial Approach

How TechForYears decides what to recommend

TechForYears is a small editorial team writing for adult children, caregivers, and older adults who are tired of confusing technology advice. We are not affiliated with the products we review, and we do not publish guest posts or sponsored content.

Our review standard

Every product comparison on this site is held to the same questions:

  • Is there a free or built-in option that may work first?
  • Is the setup something an older adult can complete without an adult child standing over their shoulder?
  • What is the recovery plan when the technology fails or the person it serves can no longer use it?
  • Does the product respect the dignity of the person using it?
  • Is the privacy policy honest, and is the support line answered by a real person?

How we handle affiliate relationships

We may earn a commission when readers buy through links on this site. That relationship does not change the price a reader pays. It does not control which products we recommend, and we routinely recommend free options, waiting, or skipping a product entirely when that is the better answer for the family.

Read the full affiliate disclosure.

How we handle YMYL topics

Topics involving health, money, legal questions, and safety (“Your Money or Your Life” topics under Google’s quality framework) are treated with extra care. We:

  • Cite primary sources (FTC, FDA, CFPB, AHRQ, AARP, Medicare.gov) where available.
  • Recommend talking to a pharmacist, doctor, attorney, or licensed advisor before acting on guidance.
  • Update articles when the underlying recommendation or product changes materially.
  • Avoid fear-based hooks, scare statistics out of context, and “perfect protection” claims.

How to reach us

If you spot something inaccurate, out of date, or unkind, please tell us. The fastest way is through the contact form linked in the site footer. We read everything and update when readers point out something we missed.

Our editorial guardrails

  • We do not shame older adults for needing help with technology.
  • We do not claim any tool prevents every scam, breach, or medication error.
  • We disclose affiliate links every time, on the same page as the recommendation.
  • We recommend free options before paid ones.
  • We update articles when guidance materially changes.
