Family Password Safety Checklist
Before you change passwords
Use this checklist when helping a parent or older relative set up safer passwords.
Before you start
- Choose one trusted helper.
- Confirm the senior understands the goal.
- Pick one password manager or built-in option to test.
- Make sure the main email account is accessible.
First accounts to review
- Main email
- Bank
- Phone provider
- Pharmacy
- Insurance or Medicare-related portal
- Main shopping account
Passkey setup
Use passkeys only when the senior mostly uses one trusted device, Face ID or fingerprint unlock works reliably, a backup sign-in method exists, and a trusted helper understands the recovery steps.
Emergency access sheet
Write down the password manager name, account email, trusted helper, recovery email, recovery phone, where emergency instructions are stored, and what to do if the phone is lost.
Do not store the master password in email, text messages, or an unprotected note.
